False Sir John

Description

“False Sir John” is a variant of “Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight”, one of the Child Ballads collected from England, Scotland, and America around the 1960s.  The heroine of the song, May Colvin, must have been familiar with a lot of English and Celtic songs in which a suitor tricked a women out of her money and killed her, because May turns the tables on Sir John and lives to tell about it.
