King Tut’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in late 1922, creating a sensation. In terms of popularity, Tutankhamun arguably became the Taylor Swift of the day, spawning enthusiasm for the discovery across the globe. Harry Von Tilzer and William Jerome got in on the excitement in 1923 when they wrote this song, which became a huge hit. 

it’s more enthusiasm than actual fact. “He ruled for many years” isn’t accurate unless you think less than a decade (1332–1323 BCE) is “many years”. After all, he became king when he was 9 years old, and the boy Pharoah died when he was 18. And it is unlikely that Cleopatra sat on his knee, as she wasn’t born until about 1254 years after he died.

But this song was never meant to be a history lesson. It’s just a fun song.
