Rock of Ages

Description

מָעוֹז צוּר (Ma'oz Tzur), or “Rock of Ages” first appeared in the 13th or 14th century.  The song, which has nothing to do with the 18th century Christian hymn of the same name, celebrates the miracle of Hanukkah.

Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes required Jews to worship Greek gods, resulting in revolt, led by the cohen ha-gadol (Israel’s high priest) Judah Maccabee, which successfully pushed back the larger Greek army.  Once the Maccabees succeeded they rededicated the temple, which included the lighting of the menorah (synagogues have an “eternal light” symbolizing God’s eternal presence that is never supposed to go out). But only one jar of oil survived the desecration, only enough for one night.  The Hanukkah miracle was that the oil lasted for eight days until a new supply could be obtained.
